Is ISB a consulting school?

Does ISB Only Place Students Into Consulting? Here's What the Placement Report Actually Shows

Every year around results season, someone posts the ISB placement report on LinkedIn with three fire emojis — and every year, Consulting is sitting right at the top. It's the single biggest sector on the sheet, no question.

But does that make ISB "just" a consulting school? No. It becomes a consulting school for the person who wants consulting. It becomes a tech school for the person chasing product roles. A marketing school, a finance school — whatever the person walking in the door is chasing.

ISB Placements by Sector: The Real Numbers

Look at the numbers properly and this becomes obvious. Yes, Consulting leads at 37%. But Technology is right behind it at 28%. BFSI takes another 11%. Then there's FMCG, e-commerce, media, energy, and manufacturing, all adding up to a real, meaningful chunk of the batch. That's not "consulting and some leftovers." That's four or five genuinely strong paths, with consulting simply being the strongest one.

So why does consulting look so dominant?

If Tech is only 9 points behind, why does Consulting feel like it owns the batch? A few reasons:

- Demand-side prep. More students actively target consulting, so more effort and case-prep hours go into cracking it.

- Bulk hiring. MBB firms together hire at least 80–100 students from ISB; Accenture alone hires 50+ each year. Volume creates visibility.

- Loudest outcome. Consulting offers get talked about. Tech and BFSI offers don't generate the same LinkedIn noise.

None of that means ISB is weak elsewhere — it means consulting recruiting is louder, not bigger relative to the rest of the batch than the numbers suggest.

What Actually Drives ISB Placement Outcomes

Placements come down to three variables:

- What students actually want to do

- What skills they walk in with

- What the market is hiring for that year

Right now, consulting sits at the intersection of all three. That doesn't make ISB a consulting factory - it makes ISB effective at getting students what they came for.

So, Is ISB a Consulting School?

Yes, ISB clearly specializes in consulting placements. Is it weak anywhere else? Not even close.

The more accurate read: ISB becomes whatever sector you show up wanting to break into. Consulting is just where the crowd currently is.
